Jayson & I didn’t want to cook on v day and we also didn’t want to get wrapped up in the hoopla at all of the restaurants. We wanted to do something different. We found City Grit. We later learned it is an old schoolhouse in SoHo that now has new uses. The space of City Grit is a furniture store by day & a restaurant by night, but no ordinary restaurant. Their mission is to sway from the typical restaurant experience and to customize a unique one for their patrons. Their concept is to provide an opportunity for new concepts to be tested and to have fun with various menu themes as well as to provide an environment for chefs from another city to be introduced and headlined here in NYC. There are 2 rooms, the front room being more of a bar/intimate setting while the backroom is filled with long communal tables – perfect to condone group conversation as Jayson and I met another couple that we actually had a lot in common with and had a lot to talk about! The decor was rustic yet modern. All of the furniture & decor in the rooms were available for sale.
We went in there blindly not knowing what would be on the menu, only knowing that chef Sarah Simmons had crafted a menu specifically for Valentine’s Day incorporating aphrodisiac foods into all of our 5 courses. There were drinks to purchase. The wine options were also chosen perfectly to accompany the dishes. Our meal was delicious leaving me wanting more. It’s a very casual setting that serves up nothing short of a fantastic dining experience. 3 hours later, we went home perfectly content. We will be sure to visit City Grit again to experience something fun and new.
