a weekend in FL ….

… with my little big friends from NYC.  Sometimes all you need to recharge your soul is a weekend away with some good homemade food, some shopping, a gorgeous beach and the best friends of 18 years that a girl can have.

The first night, my friend Judy made us the most delicious and EASY homemade meal of Spanish rice with mixed seafood and a spinach salad with goat cheese; with, of course, some prosecco to wash it down with.  All she did was make some yellow rice that already included all of the Spanish spices for  Paella and mixed in some frozen bagged seafood.  Judy thought nothing of it, but it was exactly what Stella and I needed; and at the moment there was nothing in NYC that could bring us greater comfort.

A weekend in Florida wouldn’t be complete without going to the beach.  There is nothing better than waking up to a gorgeous day and walking out to the beach, knowing that Winter is still underway in New York.  We were in heaven, the beach was gorgeous and the water temperature was perfect.

We had a great weekend with some good quality time and are already planning next year’s Winter vacation.  Ahhh until next March …

“It’s just an American joint that serves nice food, wine and spirits” …..

…. as The Dutch describes itself. This place doesn’t necessarily jive with the mission of my blog as it’s quite “big” and not so “little”; however, hearing my husband say that their fried chicken “gives Blue Smoke and Blue Ribbon a run for their money”.  I had to spread the word as to how much we enjoyed our brunch and that it’s definitely a place worth checking out regardless of the wait.  We enjoyed it so much that we were a few bites into out meal before we remembered to take a picture!  My dish is their hake sandwich with tobiko and a yuzu spread – a perfect combination of sweet from the hake mixed with the mayo and the savory of the yuzu and then some salt of the tobiko. The service was a little slow but it gave us plenty of time to drool over the anticipation of being served our meal.  Happy Brunching!

valentine’s day dinner

Jayson & I didn’t want to cook on v day and we also didn’t want to get wrapped up in the hoopla at all of the restaurants. We wanted to do something different. We found City Grit.  We later learned it is an old schoolhouse in SoHo that now has new uses.  The space of City Grit is a furniture store by day & a restaurant by night, but no ordinary restaurant.  Their mission is to sway from the typical restaurant experience and to customize a unique one for their patrons.  Their concept is to provide an opportunity for new concepts to be tested and to have fun with various menu themes as well as to provide an environment for chefs from another city to be introduced and headlined here in NYC.  There are 2 rooms, the front room being more of a bar/intimate setting while the backroom is filled with long communal tables – perfect to condone group conversation as Jayson and I met another couple that we actually had a lot in common with and had a lot to talk about!  The decor was rustic yet modern.  All of the furniture & decor in the rooms were available for sale.

We went in there blindly not knowing what would be on the menu, only knowing that chef Sarah Simmons had crafted a menu specifically for Valentine’s Day incorporating aphrodisiac foods into all of our 5 courses.  There were drinks to purchase.  The wine options were also chosen perfectly to accompany the dishes. Our meal was delicious leaving me wanting more.  It’s a very casual setting that serves up nothing short of a fantastic dining experience.  3 hours later, we went home perfectly content.  We will be sure to visit City Grit again to experience something fun and new.

eating for a good cause – the day after

Last night’s 3rd Annual Meatball Slapdown at The Brooklyn Kitchen was gastronomically entertaining in so many ways.

Jayson and I were immediately distracted and drawn to the wide range of beautifully displayed kitchen tools and old appliances.  The vast color and arrangement provide a warm welcome that made you want to hang out.  We also made our way to The Meat Hook butcher shop tucked in the back, finding it just as difficult to peal ourselves away from perusing over all of it.

The foregoing objective of the evening – the meatballs!  I diverged from of usual practice of avoiding red meat and beer to enjoy an evening of tasting meatballs from 6 NYC restaurants, all with varying ingredients and flavors while washing them all down with beer from the Brooklyn Brewery and SixPoint Craft Ales. Being that this was a competition, Jayson and I sampled each meatball knowing we must decide which was our favorite.  My favorite was the sausage meatball from The Meat Hook. Although the casing was very tough and hard to chew threw, the flavor was that of a true Italian meatball that consisted of meat and pork.  This was the only sample that came on bread from Grandaisy Bakery like a true meatball hero.  The bread and the sauce complimented the meatball very well all making this meatball my enjoyed tasting.

Jayson’s first choice was the lamb meatball from the Gramercy Tavern.  As you can see from the picture, it was served with the perfect little amount of tzatziki sauce.

Other meatballs included a Rueben meatball from the Meatball Shop served with sauerkraut and a soup based meatball from Riverpark served with kale and a mussel.

Thank you so much Brooklyn Kitchen for hosting a great event. Everyone was so nice and pleasant.  We had a great time and walked away satisfied and delighted. Of course, we made our way back to the store and to the butcher to purchase a few things.  I can’t wait for dinner tonight!

a weekend full of firsts

Samreen, @chaistyle a good friend from Business School, came back to NYC for a long visit for all “little big things”.  Samreen and I had a jam packed 24 hours of catching up, sharing deep emotions and sharing some firsts while covering 10 miles on foot between Brooklyn and lower Manhattan.  I can always rely on Samreen to enjoy some NYC standards basics as well as try out anything new – specifically as it pertains to cupcakes and bakeries.  The first of the firsts was Saturday night as we walked to dinner in SoHo over the Manhattan Bridge.   Walking over the BK Bridge is the more iconic bridge to walk on , however, the Manhattan Bridge provides the best views of that iconic bridge, the statue of liberty and the East River, as well as up-close and personal views into gorgeous DUMBO apartments and overarching sights of the colorful and highly cultural streets of NYC’s Chinatown.

On our way to dinner we stopped into C-Wonder, a fairly new shop in SoHo. It was a fun store to explore. We must have spent a good hour scouring through every product in there. Sam made a spot on description of it – its a perfect mix of Tory Burch, J-Crew and Kate Spade.  I found more fun in the dressing rooms where I was able to personally customize the music and sound to meet my mood.

We joined another friend from B School as well as my husband Jayson for sushi at Blue Ribbon Sushi.  Both Samreen and I had never been. My immediate takeaway was that the value of the fish, although the quality was great, wasn’t worth the money we spent.  Jayson and I have dined in a handful of other restaurants that provided the same quality of fish but left us feeling we received a higher rate of return.

Sunday morning, Samreen and I again walked into Manhattan to have brunch at Empellon in the West Village.  This also being a first for both of us.  We thoroughly enjoyed our entire meal sharing the beet salad, the baked egg whites and the lobster eggs benedict. We had to peel ourselves away, although wanting to try something else, to leave room for our sugar rush. Although the food at Empellon was amazing, I sat there freezing, eating with my jacket on.  To warm up with a cup of coffee we found ourselves at Doughboy on Hudson which turned out to be just want a couple of cold friends needed.  Always having to taste a cupcake, the vanilla cake with vanilla butter-cream icing wasn’t anything special; however, we were loved the french toast pie / cake with a cream cheese filling. It was out of this world.  And again leaving some room for our other “firsts” I only tasted a few of the small bite size samples of the chocolate chip banana bread and will for sure go back for a full size purchase.

We walked a bit building an appetite for our last bakery of the day – Molly’s cupcakes.  Sam asked a basic question that I should practice doing more often – “what are you known for?” Molly’s is apparently known for their fillings.  Here, we shared a vanilla cupcake with a cookie dough filling.  This was a perfect way to end my 24 day with Sam.  The cookie dough filling seeped into the cake to provide a balance of both textures and flavors.

Sam – I had a fabulous time.  Thank you for showing me how to make a big deal out of the little things.  I miss you already and can’t wait to see you again 🙂 xoxo
