mexcian and bingo

BingoLast night I made my way back to Tortilla Flats with my friend Jen to some good Mexican food and a few rounds of Bingo.  Tortilla Flats is an oldy and good which is located on the cusp of Meatpacking and the West Village, a perfect location to draw the fun party crowd as well as the crowd that commands more from their food and drinks than what is served at the standard watering hole.  Both of which Tortilla Flats delivers on.

The one room (did I mention small?) restaurant does get rowdy especially on their game nights and with the help of their strong drinks (Monday and Tuesday nights are Bingo night; Wednesday is Hula night and Sunday – well, I’m not sure what it is but it’s worth the trip to check it out).  Jen and I showed up at 7:30pm and got a table right away but any later and any larger of a party, there will be a wait for some amount of time.  They only take reservations for parties of 8 or more and there is outdoor seating which is perfect for people watching but not ideal if you want to partake in Bingo.  It does get loud but I think it’s a great place for a few friends or even a third or fourth date.  This was Jen’s 1st time there and would definitely go back!

luckyrice festival

(photo courtesy of the Huffington Post 2011) The LUCKYRICE Festival begins in NYC May 1st.  LUCKYRICE is an integrated media and marketing company and is hosting this festival to shine a spotlight on Asian culinary culture.  There are 8 events over the course of 6 days, all offering the opportunity for “tastings, dinners and gastronomic gatherings”.  All proceeds from the sale of event tickets go to benefit cityharvest.org and we all know nothing beats eating and drinking for a good cause!  I am attending the Night Market on Cinco de Mayo and is taking place in DUMBO literally under the Archway of the Manhattan Bridge.  This event will showcase flavors from Asian night markets from various Asian countries.  There will also be 2 bands; one of which a co-worker of mine is a member of – The Notorious MSG.  It should be fun.  Stay tuned for pictures and my re-cap of the night.  I’m keeping my fingers for a warm and dry evening.

Tribeca Film Festival and a Bollywood Dance Party

As you may have seen the logo to the left all over town, the Tribeca Film Festival kicked off its 2012 season Wednesday night with a great line-up of movies, shorts and documentaries.  I have tickets for this upcoming Saturday night’s screening of “Nancy, Please” and I’m already planning my strategy to be able to stay up late enough for it!  I love the festival as it’s an opportunity to view a film that a select few will be able to see (well ok, maybe we weren’t “selected” but at least we were lucky enough to grab a ticket before it was sold out); and it’s an opportunity to become intimate with the film, as I normally do, rooting for it to be picked up for meaningful distribution and becoming so excited once it does (that is, if I like the film)!

The Tribeca Film Festival is a wonderful event that brings the focus back to the southern tip of Manhattan, which in my opinion, is too often a victim of having it’s beauty overlooked.  Included in that overlooked beauty is the surviving and revamped Winter Garden inside the World Financial Center and its pier leading out to the Hudson River located in Battery Park City.  Taking advantage of TFF’s festival environment, the Winter Garden is hosting a Bollywood Dance Party Tuesday evening (April 24th).  This is a free event starts at 7.30pm with free Bollywood lessons by dhoonyaDANCE, following by dance music by DJ Rekha, from Basement Bhanghra and accompanied by colorful Bollywood movies and video mash-ups, which will be screened on its huge Media Wall. The Festival is the perfect way to begin the summer season in NYC which is always full of fun (and free) events!

the hole

The Hole is a raw art space at 312 Bowery, just north of Houston, that houses an interesting roster of experimental exhibitions as well as organizes numerous events and community services.  Right now through April 24th, The Hole has turned its indoor space into a beautiful, pacifying room that makes you believe you are outdoors and have literally stepped into one of Monet’s garden at Giverny water garden paintings.  You become one with the garden as you can walk over the Japanese foot bridge and lie on the grass near the lily pads.  The project is funded by Playboy.com and it’s evident by the thought provoking juxtaposition pictures incorporated into the piece.  Check it out as it’s around for only two more weeks.

dekalb market

This past weekend was the launching of the 2012 season for the Dekalb Market along Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn.  It’s an open-air market apropos of all things New York and for every New Yorker.  It isn’t your average farmer’s market and it isn’t your average flee market.  Dekalb Market is an outdoor urban setting; a perfect place to spend a beautiful afternoon having some drinks while listening to some music or to grab a bite to eat.  It’s also a perfect place to pop in to purchase a unique gift on your way to a house party as there are over 40 retail shops offering items including jewelry, art, housewares, new and vintage clothing, and accessories.

Rather than tents or canopies, the market uses shipping containers to house the retail and food shops – fitting for the urban and sustainable adaptation of today. The food shops are all owned by local chefs with fun and unique culinary ideas – for example, Mighty Balls primarily a meatball mobile truck owned by 2 women from families of small restaurateurs; The Purple Yam, one item they offered was a delicious nori taco with kimchi rice (pictured below); Red Hook Lobster  serving their warm Connecticut Roll; and Little Muenster for the children in all of us – not to mention some shops from last year including Robicelli’s which bakes a chicken n’ waffles cupcake, and I will for sure taste it the next time that I’m there.

This past weekend MeanRed Productions brought in some fantastic live music including Dreamland Orchestra, DJ Nickodemus, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens as well as DJ sets from Still Life and $mall change.  But don’t worry the music and the partying will not end with this past weekend.  The beer and wine garden will be open all of the time; and remember that Down & Derby roller skating party I mentioned in a previous post? Well it looks like it might be coming to Dekalb Market! Be sure to keep checking the following link for the specific dates of upcoming events! http://dekalbmarket.com/were-launching-with-a-spring-weekender-april-7-8/

Dekalb Market plans to be “a one of a kind Brooklyn destination for live music, festivals and parties alike” and I believe it will be.  Don’t worry you Manhattanites, it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away.  It’s super easy to get to and well worth the trip out of the borough.

workout with the NFL

NFL players (past and present) will be leading cardio conditioning classes held at various Equinox gyms to raise money and provide you with fun and challenging workouts.  The cost is $100 per class and all proceeds will go to the United Way to help fund NFL Play 60 programs.  I’ve taken the Whipped! class; the rotation of various exercises makes the hour go by very quickly.  The Equinox gyms are nice and are stocked with Kiehl’s products for your use.  You can see the schedule of classes and the NFL “instructors” here: http://www.unitedway.org/equinoxNFL.  It’s a great way to get in shape while raising money for childhood obesity.

roller skating dance party

YES! It does exist!  It’s a unique experience that will remind most of us of just how old we really are – and how out of touch we are with the abilities of our younger years.  That is, unless, you’ve maintained your roller skating skills all of these years.  I attended 2 of the 3 Down & Derby parties hosted by Good Units that were held in the basement of the Hudson Hotel.  For $5, I was granted access to the party and a set of roller skates.  The optional knee-high tube socks, short shorts, neon tops and fros were just a basis to the outfits that everyone came in.

I figured since I was in descent shape, I’d be able to hold my own.  Quickly I realized that I no longer had the skills and that it wasn’t about being in shape.  I had my fair share of falls, which were very apparent the next morning by my aches and bruises, but I left my pride out on 58th Street and had a blast!  Dressing up was optional but of course, it only added to the fun.  The hardest part for me was making the turns around the small “dance” floor and stopping when I approached someone too fast; all the while keeping my drink steady in my hand, trying not to spill it.  Being that it is a dance party, drinks are available at a reasonable price and you can bring them with you as you skate.  Unfortunately, skaters like me were spilling their drinks, making the floor easier to slip on.

It’s a great time.  The music is fun, it’s a fantastic place to people watch and you can burn a few calories doing something you may not have done in a VERY long time.

If you want to attend a party, keep checking the below link for upcoming dates and the place as it announced that the party will no longer be promoted through Good Units and my guess is that it will no longer be held in the Hudson Hotel.  http://www.skatedrinkdance.com/skate/?page_id=209

Hopefully I’ll see you there! Happy Skating!

sometimes a home cooked meal rises above all

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to check out 2 new restaurants that were on my list to try – 1) Back Forty West in SoHo and 2) Miss Lily’s in the Village; all the while mixing in 1 night of cooking at home.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t one meal that was totally enjoyable from beginning to end (aside from the company that I was with).  Looking back, there were terrific dishes from each meal that I would definitely recommend, however, overall, the sum of the parts is definitely greater than the whole.  It would be great if I could take parts from every meal to put together one fabulous meal.  That one meal would be better than all of the meals added together.

Friday: I had never been to the original Back Forty in the East Village so I was excited to check out the new one.  My husband and I met some friends there Friday night.  We arrived first and were sat the bar to wait for them.  The downstairs bar area was very warm and cozy, like you arrived into your friends upstate country home.  It was a small seating area but not too small as it didn’t give off the feeling of claustrophobia, and decorated with soft caramel wood tables, chairs, stools and bar – a perfect place to either sit on a cold night or open the windows for some fresh air on a warm spring day.  They even had all stemless glassware (which I’m a fan off as it feel less rigid and more laid back).  When our friends arrived we were taken upstairs to our tables. We were told the 2nd floor of the restaurant took over a renovated apartment and it is exactly what it felt like.  It was a fluid feel of the warm coziness from downstairs.

(photos courtesy of SeriousEats.com) What I would choose from Back Forty West for my perfect WHOLEsome meal?  The appetizers and the dessert!  For the appetizers we had the Pork Face Nuggets which weren’t very greasy and had lots of flavor; the Slow Smoked BBQ Ribs which a perfect slight smoked by their in-house smoker; and The Kale Escarole Salad (less the anchovies) which was a  Caesar salad alternative and a perfect complement to our smoked appetizers.  For dessert, we had the Heirloom Navel Orange Upside Down Cake – a light citrus cake that settled your stomach as it perfectly contradicted the sweet smoked meats that we had consumed.  In an effort to not be too negative, I will only add that the main entrees just didn’t live up to what we experienced with the appetizers and we should have stayed with the apps and drinks (to note: they have their own in-house brewer as well).

Saturday: Another set of friends come over for dinner with their 28 month old son so we figured it would be best to cook. Ok well I didn’t cook, Jayson did, but I did help 🙂

The piece de resistance of the entire weekend of eating is what my husband made for us and our guests Saturday night.   Jayson made Spicy Orange Shrimp over a healthy Vegetable Fried (Brown) Rice with steamed broccoli.  It was so good, not only were our friends impressed but we impressed ourselves!  Comfort food on a chilly night without any of the guilt? How can you go wrong?  The downside to this meal was that sometimes healthy is not always the tastiest.  The healthy french fries that we made and the mini chocolate cake that we bought for dessert were just ok.

Sunday: Sunday I met a 3rd friend at Miss Lily’s for brunch and some good ol fashion girl time.

Miss Lily’s embodied its Jamaican Caribbean theme from the moment we opened the front door.  From the hostess whom lead you inside to a diner-esq ambiance which reminds you of a Tiki bar on the beach playing Jamaican Caribbean music.  Immediately we forgot that we were on West Houston on a 50 degree cold Sunday afternoon. My friend ordered an egg, potato and toast dish and I ordered a Jerk chicken salad – both basic but enjoyable.  What stood out was the Grilled Jerk Corn which was topped with melted spicy sweet butter and toasted coconut.  YUM! The last addition to this fabricated fabulous meal would the corn as a side dish, for sure.

One final thought. If you are hating on this weather and wish you were closer to the equator, check out Radio Lily, their internet radio station.  It will help transport you to that warm place.

Brucennial 2012

If you happen to find yourself on Bleeker Street in the West Village (159 Bleeker Street to be exact) with a few minutes to spare, swing into the Brucennial 2012 for some fun and light culture.  It’s being referred to as the downtown alternative to the Whitney Biennial.  The Brucennial 2012, in its 3rd year, is a collection of works from approximately 400 artists, all with depth and beauty that draw you in and beg you to take another look.  It’s free but only around through April 1st.  Check it out!

pizza!!!!

My husband woke up craving pizza.  We found an article by Alan Richman, from the June 2009 edition of GQ, claiming Lucali’s in Brooklyn to be the 2nd best pizza place in the country. Unfortunately, it isn’t open Saturday afternoons.  Instead we decided to brave the crowds and head to Grimaldi’s under the Brooklyn Bridge.  It was a gorgeous day so we didn’t mind the wait outside and it was 3pm, so the wait ended up only being about 30 mins.  Having run 9 miles earlier in the day, I already ate lunch as I was starving.  I figured I’d just have a bite of whatever Jayson ordered… well, the pizza was much better than I had expected and I ended up eating 2 slices!  The mushroom pepperoni pizza was delicious and worth the the wait.  The sauce and cheese was evenly displaced and the crust was a perfect thinness.

Interestingly, as we queuing up, we noticed a building next door that is soon to be another pizza place called “Juliana’s” by Patsy Grimaldi.  After further investigation, we found out  that the current Grimaldi’s hasn’t been owned by a Grimaldi since 1998 and now Patsy Grimaldi wants to reopen a his own pizza place.  Another side note and interesting fact, the original Patsy’s Pizzera in East Harlem was opened by Grimaldi’s aunt and is where he learned how to make pizza.

Julianna’s isn’t open just yet, but I will be sure to do my own taste test to see the difference between the two. Stay tuned …
